General presentation of the Kabbage Group

The Kabbage Group is a giant in Morocco with over 50 years of experience in the agricultural sector. It is a conglomerate of companies owned by the heirs of Mr. Abbès Kabbage, a pioneer in the development of the citrus industry in Morocco, particularly in the Souss region where he began his activity in 1957.

Indeed, production is carried out by the historic company "Groupe Abbès Kabbage," which owns 2000 hectares spread across the Souss, Gharb, and Beni Mellal regions. These estates, reorganized by his son, Tariq Kabbage, are said to be model citrus farms.

Since the group does not export its products in raw form, a packaging station called "Kabbage Souss Station" is responsible for packaging. This station covers an area of 80,000 square meters with a refrigeration capacity of 10,000 tons. The annual production of this station is estimated to reach 30,000 tons.

The activities of the group.

The Kabbage Group is thus organized around 4 divisions involved in research, production, packaging, and marketing.

The research :

Upstream of the activities of Domaines Abbés Kabbage, research is a decisive source of added value. Its objective: to create and test varieties that will meet the needs and developments of the markets. Among the main research axes are:
  • Agronomic characteristics (yield, size, etc.)
  • Environmental considerations (water consumption, etc.)
  • Morphological (color, appearance, etc.), organoleptic, and nutritional characteristics
This activity is carried out by SAPIAMA, based a few kilometers from Taroudant, in the heart of the citrus production zone. SAPIAMA is one of the main producers of citrus seedlings in Morocco. Another production site has been established in the Belksiri region to meet the needs of the Northern region of the Kingdom.

The agricultural operation:

For the group, producing high-quality products is a strategic link. This function is managed by the agricultural sites of the various companies within the group (DAK, SAPIAMA, SKS PROD, KB AGRO, KB GHARB, SEBNAK). For this reason, the farms are certified by Global Gap and Nurture, allowing the group to access the most demanding markets in terms of quality (Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, United States, Canada).

Indeed, this production is primarily based on seedlings, fruits, and vegetables.

Seedlings : The first link in the value creation chain is the nursery. The availability of high-quality seedlings ensures the profitability and sustainability of orchards. These seedlings are supplied to agricultural operations. The production of seedlings must provide two guarantees: maximum flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of the orchards, as well as a high level of quality. Producing the best seedlings is a profession in itself, requiring a rigorous choice of production techniques. This mission is carried out by the SAPIAMA nursery for citrus fruits and by DAK Massa for early seedlings.

Fruits and vegetables: Domaines Abbés Kabbage are located in the Souss-Massa and Gharb-Larache regions, where citrus fruits, early vegetables, and olives are cultivated. Since Mr. Tariq Kabbage has been managing the Domaines, the cultivated areas have been steadily increasing.

Packaging

The packaging and conditioning stations (Kabbage Souss Station, Kabbage Massa Station, and Sapiama Station) are equipped with the latest technologies in pre-calibration, packaging, and storage. Modern industrial equipment, the invaluable expertise of its teams, and frequent and rigorous controls ensure the quality of our fruits and vegetables. The production from our orchards as well as that of our partners, packaged and conditioned under optimal conditions, ensures efficient export, both in terms of quality and quantity.

Export

The group exports its products via the Kabbage Souss Packaging Station (SKS) and Fresh Fruit. Fresh Fruit is a strategic alliance of exporters (Mbrouka, Limouna Souss, Priagrus, Agrumar, and others) created in 1998. Its exports represent about 23% of the national citrus exports. Fresh Fruit has enabled the creation of a strong hub, which has attracted other exporters and in which SKS plays a crucial role. Logistically, the group, through Fresh Fruit in cooperation with other members of the alliance, has managed to develop an efficient logistics network, particularly in North America. Since the 2015/2016 season, SKS has been exporting and marketing its production directly.
